The word of the Lord comes to Hosea: go, take a wife of whoredoms, and have children of whoredoms. A prophet whose entire marriage is to be a living sign. He marries Gomer. She bears three children, each given a prophetic name: Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah (not pitied), and Lo-ammi (not my people). Yet a promise at the end: the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, and those called not my people will be called sons of the living God.
God commands Hosea to marry Gomer, a woman of whoredom, turning the prophet's life into a living parable of Israel's unfaithfulness. Three children are born with names that pronounce escalating judgment: Jezreel (bloodshed), Lo-ruhamah (not pitied), Lo-ammi (not my people). Yet even here a future restoration is promised.
God makes Hosea's marriage a walking sermon, each child's name a judgment Israel must live inside.
verse: "Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God." (1:9): The covenant is publicly declared void, three words reversing the defining promise of Sinai.
Around 755 BC, Jeroboam II still reigns and Israel looks prosperous on the surface. Hosea marries Gomer, likely in Samaria or the northern hill country, while Baal shrines crowd the high places and political stability masks a deep spiritual rot that is only years from Assyrian judgment.
Hosea the prophet obeys a brutal divine command. Gomer becomes his unfaithful wife and the embodiment of Israel's spiritual adultery. Their three children, Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah, and Lo-ammi, carry names that are verdicts. God speaks as both commander and betrayed husband.
Chapter 1 establishes the entire book's method: lived metaphor. Israel's apostasy is not abstract theology but domestic betrayal, felt in a real home with real children bearing names that shame and condemn. The chapter also holds the seed of reversal, because the very names that wound will one day be reversed when God restores his people.
The command to marry a prostitute is brutal, and Hosea obeys without recorded protest. Every child born into that house carries a name that is a public wound.
1The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
2The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.
3So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son.
4And the LORD said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
5And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.
6And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
7But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.
8Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.
9Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.
10Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
11Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.
