The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.
A psalm in two movements. The first (vv1-6) is radiant confidence: God is light and salvation, armies cannot shake the psalmist, the one thing desired is to dwell in God's house beholding beauty. The second (vv7-14) drops to urgent petition: hide not thy face, do not cast me off, false witnesses have risen. It ends with a pastoral command to wait. The shift is jarring and honest.
The 'one thing' that orients a life is not safety or victory but the sight of God's beauty, and that desire is not killed by the crisis that follows.

Superscription: 'A Psalm of David.' The two-part structure (confidence then petition) may reflect two separate psalms edited together, or the natural oscillation of a single prayer session. The 'father and my mother forsake me' (v10) suggests extreme social isolation. Likely composed during Saul's pursuit or Absalom's rebellion.
David as speaker throughout; God addressed as light, salvation, strength; unnamed enemies and foes; false witnesses; father and mother who might forsake; God as the one who will take David up even then.
Psalm 27 is one of the great spiritual direction psalms. The 'one thing' of verse 4 anticipates the 'one thing needful' of Luke 10:42 and Mary's choice. Augustine's restless heart finds its echo here. The psalm's combination of bold confidence and urgent petition models a mature faith that does not require resolution before it trusts.
For when your life is complicated and your fears are real and yet somewhere underneath the noise you still know what you actually want. This psalm names the one thing.
1[A Psalm of David.] The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

5For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

10When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
11Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
12Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
