Jehoshaphat returns home and is rebuked by the seer Jehu for helping someone who hates God. But Jehu notes that there is some good in him because he removed Asherah poles and sought God. Jehoshaphat responds by traveling throughout the land and turning people back to God. He appoints judges in every city with specific instructions: act with integrity, fear God rather than men, and remember you judge not for men but for the Lord.

Receiving a rebuke well and responding with broader reform is itself a form of faithfulness: the seer's word becomes the catalyst for a nationwide justice initiative.

6: "And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment." Every judge in every city is reminded that accountability runs in only one direction.

The judicial system Jehoshaphat establishes here, with Levites, priests, and elders forming courts in the cities, anticipates later post-exilic judicial structures described in Ezra-Nehemiah. The Chronicler may be describing an institution that his community is actively trying to rebuild. The blueprint has a pedigree: a good king, receiving a rebuke, responding with institutions.

Jehu the seer, who rebukes without destroying; Jehoshaphat, who receives the word and acts; the judges of Judah, entrusted with a theology of their office.

This chapter outlines a serious judicial reform that is unusual in the ancient world: a king establishing courts with written instructions grounded in religious accountability rather than royal preference. The Chronicler presents it as Jehoshaphat's response to the near-disaster of the previous chapter, which suggests he understood that bad alliances and corrupt justice are connected failures.

For when someone tells you something uncomfortable about yourself and you have to decide what to do with it. Jehu does not spare Jehoshaphat but also does not condemn him outright. There is good in you, and here is what to do with the failure: go and do better.
