What Does God Say About Shame?

“And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

Genesis 3:9-10

This is the first conversation after the first sin, and notice who moves toward whom. Adam hides. God comes looking. Where art thou is not a request for coordinates; God knew the tree. It is an invitation to come out. Shame's first instinct is to hide from God. God's first instinct is to call your name.

“I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.”

Psalm 34:4-5

They looked unto him, and were lightened. The Hebrew suggests faces catching light. Shame does the opposite: it teaches your face to study the floor. David's claim is that looking at God reverses what shame did to your posture. Not one face that turned toward Him stayed ashamed.

“Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.”

Isaiah 54:4

God speaks here to Israel like a woman whose past keeps following her around. Fear not, thou shalt not be ashamed. Then He goes further: thou shalt forget. Not suppress. Forget, the way a healed wound stops reporting pain. God cancels shame's verdict and then fades the memory of the trial.

“For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.”

Isaiah 61:7

For your shame ye shall have double. God's arithmetic for the shamed is not restoration to zero. It is double the portion, everlasting joy in place of disgrace. Jesus read this chapter aloud in Nazareth to announce His mission. Trading shame for honor is His stated line of work.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Romans 8:1

No condemnation. Not reduced condemnation, not suspended pending good behavior. None, now, for those in Christ Jesus. Shame keeps rereading the old verdict long after the court has closed the case. This verse is the closing of the case. Read it as often as shame speaks.

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:2

Despising the shame. The cross was designed to humiliate; that was the Roman point of it. Jesus looked at the deepest shame a human could carry and treated it as beneath His attention, because of the joy set before Him. He knows exactly what shame weighs. He carried yours through it and sat down.
