Bible Verses for Forgiveness
Forgiveness is two separate fires in Scripture. The one God offers you for what you have done, and the one He asks you to extend to someone who has done something to you. Both are hard. Both are central to how the Bible talks about being healed and being free. Tonight, whichever side of forgiveness you find yourself on, these verses have been what God's people reach for when they need to let something go or be let go.
6 Scriptures for Forgiveness
βIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.β
1 John 1:9
Two words matter. Faithful, meaning He does it every time, not just when He feels like it. And just, meaning the forgiveness is not sentimental. It is legal, grounded in what Jesus already paid. When you confess, you are not asking God to look the other way. You are claiming a transaction that has already cleared.

Psalm 103:12
David does not say north from south. North and south meet at the poles. East and west never meet. They are infinitely separated. Whatever you have done that you still carry, God has put it in a direction that cannot loop back to find you.

Ephesians 4:32
Paul sets the standard high and grounds it in the right place. You forgive like God forgave you. Not because the other person earned it. Not because what happened was small. Because you know what it is to be on the receiving end of mercy you could not have paid for.

He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.β
Micah 7:18-19
Micah does not just say God forgives. He says God delights in mercy. It gives Him joy. And the final image is specific: sins cast into the depths of the sea. Not nearby. Not retrievable. The ocean floor, where nothing is brought back.

Matthew 6:14-15
Jesus is firm here in a way that is uncomfortable. The same openness we extend to others is the shape of what we are able to receive. Not because God's forgiveness is transactional, but because a heart clenched tight against someone else's debt cannot hold open hands for its own grace.

Colossians 3:13
Paul pairs forbearing with forgiving. Forbearing is the daily patience with people who are still annoying. Forgiving is the heavier work of releasing the thing that actually hurt you. Both are required for peace with anyone for long. Both are modeled by Christ.

Father, forgiveness is hard in both directions tonight. If I am the one who did wrong, I confess it. I do not minimize it. I hand it to You and trust Your promise that You are faithful and just to forgive. If I am the one holding someone else's wrong, I ask for the grace to begin letting it go. Not tonight all at once. But to take the first step, because I do not want to carry this any longer, and because You did not carry what I owed either. Soften what has gone hard in me. Remove what I cannot remove myself. Amen.
