Bible Verses for Forgiving Others
Forgiving someone who hurt you is not a feeling you have to manufacture. It is an action you take, usually many times over the same wound. The Bible does not sugarcoat how hard it is. Jesus said seventy times seven, which is less a math problem and more a way of saying the work does not end at a neat number. These verses are for the name you cannot stop replaying, the debt you know you need to release. Read slowly.
6 Scriptures for Forgiving Others
“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”
Matthew 18:21-22
Peter thought seven was generous. Jesus raised it to four hundred and ninety, not because He was counting but because He was making a point. Forgiveness is not a single decision. It is a posture you take again every time the memory comes back. The work keeps coming. So does the grace for it.

Ephesians 4:31-32
Paul lists what needs to go: bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, malice. And he does not say wait for it to fade. Put it away. Then he names the exchange. What you put away gets replaced by kindness, tenderness, forgiveness. And the measure of the forgiveness is what God has done for you.

Forbearing is daily patience with annoying human beings. Forgiving is the heavier work of releasing a real wound. Paul pairs them because you need both. The standard is the way Christ forgave you. Completely. Before you deserved it. At His own cost.

Jesus ties forgiving others to your own prayer life. Not because God's mercy is conditional on your moral performance. Because a heart clenched around someone else's debt cannot hold open hands for its own grace. The release is for you as much as for them.

Paul gives you a quiet out. Vengeance is God's, not yours. You are free from the job of evening the score. That is a relief. Now your only job is to not let the evil done to you turn you into someone who does evil back. Overcome with good. The release is also the victory.

This is the hardest verse in the Bible on forgiveness. Jesus does not soften it. A heart that refuses to release another is closed to receive for itself. Forgiveness is not earning salvation. It is the posture a forgiven heart cannot help but take once it understands what it has been given.
