What Does God Say About Lust?

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Matthew 5:27-28

Jesus moves the line from the act to the look, because that is where adultery actually begins. The heart runs ahead of the body every time. This standard is impossible to keep by willpower alone, and that is part of the point. It drives you to grace instead of pretending.

“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

James 1:14-15

James maps the whole chain. Lust draws, then entices, then conceives, then brings forth sin, and sin finished brings death. Nothing in that sequence is instant. There is a window between drawn away and conceived, and that window is where the fight happens. Catch it early, because it only gets heavier downstream.

“I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?”

Job 31:1

Job did not wait until the moment of testing to decide. He made a covenant with his eyes in advance and named the terms out loud. That is the strategy: decide once, ahead of time, instead of negotiating fresh every time. The eyes are the gate. Job put a lock on it.

“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

2 Timothy 2:22

Paul's tactical advice is one word: flee. Not debate, not linger, not test your limits. Run. Then notice the second half: follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord. Escape has a direction, and it has company.

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

1 John 2:16-17

John files the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes under one heading: a world already passing away. Lust always sells the temporary at the price of the permanent. He that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. One of those two things lasts. Spend yourself on that one.

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:16

Paul does not say grit your teeth and suppress the flesh. He says walk in the Spirit, and the fulfilling of lust loses its slot. This is displacement, not white-knuckling. A day genuinely filled with God has less vacancy for lust to rent.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Psalm 51:10

David wrote this psalm after his lust had already cost him everything it could take. He still prayed create, a word Scripture reserves for what only God can make from nothing. You cannot scrub the old heart clean. You can ask for a new one. Ask.
