What Does God Say About Backsliding?

“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.”

Jeremiah 3:22

God addresses backsliders by name and still calls them children. Return, and I will heal, as if backsliding were less a crime to punish and more a wound to treat. Then notice the second half of the verse: the moment they turn, the words are already in their mouths. The way back is shorter than you think.

“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”

Hosea 14:4

Hosea spent his whole book on a people who left God over and over. This is the closing word. I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely. Freely means without invoice. The anger is turned away, not suspended, not pending review. This is what God says over a repeat offender.

“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.”

Luke 15:20-24

Jesus tells this story to show what actually happens when someone comes home. The son has a speech prepared about being unworthy. He never finishes it. The father is running before the speech starts, and the robe, the ring, and the feast interrupt the apology. Heaven's response to a returning backslider is not probation. It is a party.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

Psalm 51:10-12

David prays this after the worst failure of his life, and he prays it from the far side of knowing God well. He asks for three things: a clean heart, a kept presence, a returned joy. Notice he asks for the joy of thy salvation, not the salvation itself. Some distance costs you the gladness, not the belonging. Ask for it back.

“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.”

Joel 2:25

The locust years are the ones you cannot get back, the seasons eaten by drifting. God speaks to them directly. I will restore the years. Only God talks about time this way, as something He can repay. Your wasted seasons are not deleted from His arithmetic. They are recoverable.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9

The mechanics of coming back are one sentence long. Confess, and He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse. Not faithful and generous, faithful and just: the price is already paid, so forgiving you is God keeping His own books straight. No waiting period appears in this verse, because there is none.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

James 4:8

Here is the physics of return. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Movement toward Him is answered with movement toward you, every time. James adds the honest part: cleanse and purify, because coming back means leaving something behind. But the nearness is promised before you are finished.
