What Does God Say About Abuse?

“The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.”

Psalm 11:5

Read that again. His soul hateth. This is one of the strongest statements of divine emotion in the Bible, and it is aimed at the one who loves violence. God is not indifferent to what was done to you. He is not weighing both sides. The abuse was not discipline, not love, not your fault. Heaven has already ruled on it.

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Nigh means near. Not watching from a distance, near. Abuse teaches you that closeness is dangerous, so this verse can be hard to receive. But God's nearness does not grab or demand. He draws close to the broken the way light comes into a room: present, warm, asking nothing before it gives.

“The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.”

Psalm 9:9

A refuge is a place you run to. The word assumes running is allowed. Scripture never tells the oppressed to stay put and absorb the blows; it gives them somewhere to go. God calls Himself that place. If people who claimed His name were the ones who hurt you, know this: they were misrepresenting Him. The refuge is real.

“Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain. So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.”

1 Samuel 19:11-12

David was a man after God's own heart, and when a violent man came for him, he went out the window. He did not stay to fix Saul. He did not call the danger a test of his faith. Leaving an abusive situation is not a failure of love or belief. In Scripture, it is what the faithful do.

“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”

Psalm 147:3

Bindeth up is medical language, the slow work of dressing a wound so it can close. Healing from abuse is not one prayer and done. It is cleaned and covered and checked again, often with counselors and safe people as part of the bandaging. God works through all of it. He is patient with wounds. Be patient with yours.

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Romans 12:19

This verse is not asking you to drop the matter. It is telling you who holds the case file. I will repay, saith the Lord: justice is coming, carried by hands stronger than yours. That frees you from the exhausting job of settling the score. Reporting abuse and seeking protection are not vengeance. They are truth. The reckoning itself belongs to God.
