Bible Verses for Fear

Fear is the oldest feeling in Scripture. The first thing Adam says after the fall is that he was afraid and hid. From that moment forward the Bible does not pretend fear away. It meets it. The verses below are what God has been saying to frightened people for three thousand years, and He has not once grown tired of saying it. Read them slowly. Let them speak back to whatever is pressing on you tonight.

6 Scriptures for Fear

β€œFor God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

2 Timothy 1:7

Paul writes this from prison, waiting on an execution that is probably weeks away. He is the one talking about a sound mind. If he can say this in that cell, the fear you are carrying right now is not the final word either. It is not the spirit God gave you.

β€œFear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Isaiah 41:10

Five promises in one breath. I am with you. I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will hold you up. Fear wants you to believe you are alone in this. God answers five times in a row that you are not.

β€œThe LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Psalm 27:1

David is not pretending he never feels fear. The whole psalm is a man talking himself back into courage one line at a time. The question is not rhetorical. It is him arguing with his own heart, the same argument you may be having right now.

β€œHave not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Joshua 1:9

Joshua is about to lead a people across a river into a land full of enemies. The giant Moses has just died. And God does not say the road is safe. He says He will go with Joshua on it. Sometimes courage is not the absence of danger. It is the presence of God in it.

β€œThere is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

1 John 4:18

John writes as an old man who had walked with Jesus. He names it plainly. Fear has torment. He does not scold you for feeling it. He points you to what drives it out, which is love you cannot manufacture on your own. You receive it. Let it in tonight.

β€œWhat time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

Psalm 56:3

David does not say if I am afraid. He says what time I am afraid, as if it is a given. The fear comes. That is not the question. The question is what you do in the moment the fear arrives. His answer is one verb: trust. Not figure out. Not fix. Trust.

A Prayer for Fear

God, I am afraid, and I do not want to pretend otherwise. I have tried to think my way out and it has not worked. So here I am, bringing the fear to You instead of trying to hide it. You are not surprised by it. You are not disappointed in me for feeling it. You said You would be with me, and I need that to be true right now more than I need the fear to leave. Steady my breathing. Quiet my chest. Remind me what is actually true, and help me believe it. You are here. I am not alone. That is enough for tonight. Amen.
