What is Beer?
Beer was a stopping place on Israel's wilderness journey, and the text names it for what it was: 'And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the LORD spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water' (Numbers 21:16). There Israel sang the song of the well that the princes and nobles had digged. A place of the same name sheltered Jotham, who ran away and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother (Judges 9:21).
