Who is Ahimelech?

Ahimelech was the priest at Nob, son of Ahitub, who gave food and Goliath's sword to the fleeing David (1 Samuel 21:1). After Doeg the Edomite reported this to Saul (1 Samuel 22:9), Saul had Ahimelech and the priests of Nob put to death (1 Samuel 22:16), though his son Abiathar escaped (1 Samuel 22:20). The name is also borne by Abiathar's son, a priest under David (2 Samuel 8:17).
