Seven deacons are chosen to handle the daily distribution to widows so the apostles can devote themselves to prayer and the word. Stephen, full of faith and power, does great wonders and miracles. Some men dispute with him and cannot resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he speaks. They suborn false witnesses. He is brought before the council. They see his face as it had been the face of an angel.
A complaint arises that Hellenistic Jewish widows are being overlooked in the daily food distribution. The twelve gather the congregation, propose selecting seven men of good reputation and the Spirit to handle this work, freeing the apostles for prayer and preaching. Seven are chosen, including Stephen and Philip. The church continues to grow rapidly. Stephen, full of grace and power, faces opposition from a synagogue group who cannot stand against his wisdom.
The first administrative crisis in the church is solved by delegation and the recognition that different callings require different structures, not one person doing everything.
4: "But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word." Not a dismissal of practical care, but a division of labor that protects the community's two most critical functions.
The early Jerusalem church had thousands of members spread across a city, including many diaspora Jews who had returned to Jerusalem, possibly for Passover and stayed after Pentecost. These Greek-speaking believers had their own synagogues and their own networks. The friction between them and the local Hebrew-speaking community was not theological, it was logistical and cultural. The seven men chosen all have Greek names, an intentional signal.
The twelve apostles, recognizing a structural problem; the Hellenistic Jewish widows, overlooked; Stephen, full of faith and the Spirit; Philip, who will later evangelize Samaria; the synagogue disputants who target Stephen.
This chapter records the first church organizational decision and the appointment of the first deacons, a word derived from the Greek for servant. The crisis is ethnic: Greek-speaking Jewish Christians versus Hebrew-speaking ones. The solution integrates both, choosing seven men with Greek names. Stephen becomes a major figure in chapters 7, and Philip in chapter 8, showing that the deacons quickly exceeded the original task.
For when a community's growth creates cracks and some people are falling through. The apostles did not ignore the complaint or spiritualize it. They reorganized.
1And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
2Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
3Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
4But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
5And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
6Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
7And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
8And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
9Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
11Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
12And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
13And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
14For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
15And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
