What Does God Say About Miscarriage?

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Nigh means near. Not watching from a distance, not waiting for you to recover first, near. God moves toward broken hearts the way a parent moves toward a crying child. You do not have to climb out of this grief to reach Him. He came to where you are.

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.”

Psalm 139:13-16

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect. David says God saw and knew him before he was formed, when no one else could. That was true of the child you lost. God saw. God knew. The life was short, but it was never hidden from Him, and it was never unloved.

“And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”

2 Samuel 12:22-23

David loses his infant son and says the sentence grieving parents have held onto for three thousand years: I shall go to him. Not vague comfort. Direction. He cannot bring the child back, and he says so plainly, but he knows where the child is, and he expects to arrive there himself.

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

Matthew 5:4

Jesus blesses mourning. He does not bless getting over it quickly, or staying strong for everyone, or pretending. Mourn is the posture and comforted is the promise. Grieving your baby is not weak faith. In this verse it is the very thing Jesus singles out for blessing.

“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”

Psalm 147:3

Binding a wound takes time and touch. It is not instant, and Scripture does not pretend it is. The next verse says this same God counts the stars and calls them all by name. The God big enough for the stars is the one bending over your wound, and His hands are careful.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

This is where the whole story lands. God Himself wiping tears, death gone, and no more of this kind of pain, ever. It does not shrink today's grief. It puts a border around it. What you are carrying is real, and it is also temporary, and the hand that ends it will be God's own.
