What Does God Say About Feeling Empty?

“Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?”

Ecclesiastes 1:2-3

Solomon had everything a person can acquire. Money, power, pleasure, projects, fame. He audited all of it and filed this report: vanity, a vapor, here and gone. The Bible lets the richest man in the ancient world say out loud what you have suspected. If anything under the sun could have filled you, it already would have.

“My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?”

Psalm 42:2

The psalmist does not apologize for the ache. He names it as thirst, and thirst is not a character flaw. It is a design feature. You were built to be filled by God Himself, and nothing smaller fits the space. The hollow you call emptiness may be the most honest prayer you have.

“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.”

Isaiah 55:1-2

God asks a blunt question through Isaiah. Why do you keep paying for what does not satisfy? He is not scolding. He is inviting, and the invitation is strange on purpose: buy without money. What actually fills you is not for sale. It is offered.

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 4:13-14

Jesus said this to a woman at a well, on her sixth relationship, still thirsty. He does not shame her. He diagnoses her. Everything she had tried was this water, the kind that works for an hour. Then He offers the other kind, a spring inside, not a bucket you have to keep hauling.

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

John 6:35

Bread was survival food, the thing nobody could live a day without. Jesus picks that word deliberately. He is not offering to be a nice addition to a full life. He is claiming to be the staple, the thing the soul starves without. Never hunger is a large promise, and He makes it anyway.

“For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”

Psalm 107:9

One verse, one claim. He satisfies the longing soul. Psalm 107 is a list of people who hit bottom in different ways, and every stanza ends the same: they cried to the LORD, and He delivered them. The empty soul is not a problem He struggles with. Filling it is what He does.

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

Psalm 16:11

David ends this psalm with a location. Fulness of joy is not a mood you generate. It has an address: in Thy presence. Emptiness is a kind of homesickness, and this verse tells you where home is. The path of life leads somewhere specific.
