Bible Verses for Depression

If you are reading this in the dark, not the kind that goes away when the lights come on but the kind that lives inside your chest, you are in old company. The Bible is full of people who felt exactly what you are feeling. David. Elijah. Jeremiah. Job. None of them got a quick fix. All of them got something more honest and more lasting. God did not ask them to cheer up. He stayed with them in it. Tonight He will do the same for you. Read slowly. No rush. The verses are not going anywhere.

6 Scriptures for Depression

β€œThe LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Nigh means near. Not watching from a distance. Not waiting for you to feel better. Near the broken heart, in the moment it is broken. God is closer to you in this than He would be if you were doing fine.

β€œWhy art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”

Psalm 42:11

Notice the word yet. Not now. Not today. Yet. The psalmist does not pretend the cloud has lifted. He is speaking to his own soul about a future he cannot feel right now, because he trusts the God on the other side of it. You are allowed to speak to your own soul tonight.

β€œI waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”

Psalm 40:1-2

David does not describe a quick lift. The word patiently is buried in verse one. He waited. Then God inclined, a word meaning to bend down, to come close. The pit is still described as horrible. The mud is still mire. But eventually there was a rock underfoot. There will be for you.

β€œBut he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.”

1 Kings 19:4-7

Elijah had just won the biggest spiritual victory of his life and collapsed into suicidal despair days later. He asked to die. What God sent was not a sermon. Food. Sleep. Then more food. Then more sleep. God's first move with Elijah's depression was physical care. If you are in that place tonight, He is not disappointed in you. He is making sure you eat.

β€œWhen thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

Isaiah 43:2

Isaiah does not say if. He says when. The waters come. The fire comes. God does not promise to route you around the depths. He promises to be with you while you are in them, and to keep you from being consumed by what feels like it is consuming you.

β€œCome unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus does not require you to describe what is wrong. He says come. That is all. The rest He offers is not the end of your struggle. It is rest for the soul underneath the struggle, the deepest part of you that has been tired for a long time.

A Prayer for Depression

God, I am low in a way I cannot explain to the people around me. I am not sure I can explain it to myself. So I am bringing it to You raw, the way it actually feels, without trying to make it sound better. You have not asked me to feel anything specific tonight. Just to come. So I am here. Be nigh to the broken heart, the way You promised. Send the small mercies, food and sleep and the presence of another person if that is what You know I need. I am going to trust that Your compassions are new in the morning, even if tonight is heavy. Amen.
