What Does God Say About Divorce?
God's heart on divorce is specific and grieving. He says clearly that He hates it, not because He hates the people in it, but because He hates what it does to them. That is an important distinction if you are in one, coming out of one, or carrying the marks of one that happened years ago. Scripture does not leave the divorced stranded. The same God who mourns the broken covenant moves toward the broken person. These verses are where to go when the papers are signed, or should have been, or were.
6 Scriptures for Divorce?
βFor the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.β
Malachi 2:16
God calls divorce what it is. Violence, even when it is civil and mutual. He hates what it does, not the people caught in it. If you are divorced or divorcing, this verse is not a condemnation of you. It is God standing in your anger about the fact that something this costly happened at all.

Psalm 34:18
Whatever you did or did not do to end up here, God is closer to you tonight than He would be if everything were fine. Nigh, meaning near. Not hovering at a judging distance. Near the broken heart that a divorce leaves behind, even the one that is also a relief.
Read the full chapter ββThe Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.β
Isaiah 61:1-3
Jesus quoted this as His mission statement. Beauty for ashes. What divorce leaves behind often feels like ashes, the end of the life you thought you were building. God trades ashes for beauty. That is what He specifically came to do. Not to make the divorce unhappen. To build something new on top of where it fell.

Psalm 147:3
The picture is a physician working slowly with each cut. One wound at a time. God is not going to rush you through this season. He is going to bind up the wounds at the pace a wound actually heals. Some days you will feel it. Most days you will just notice later that something that used to hurt does not hurt as much.

Jeremiah 29:11
Written to people in exile, displaced, grieving the life they had been forced out of. God does not promise to reverse the exile. He promises the thinking about them never stopped and that He had an end in mind that was still good. Divorce feels like exile. The same promise applies.

Romans 8:28
God does not call divorce good. He can still weave good out of it. The promise is not that the marriage will return or that the wound will disappear. It is that nothing is wasted in the hands of a God who is still working, still planning, still writing chapters past the one that just ended.

God, You see exactly where I am. The anger, the relief, the sadness that comes in waves I did not expect. You said You heal the brokenhearted, so tonight I am asking You to heal mine. Do not rush the work. Do not let me rush it either. Take my ashes and do what only You can do with them. Wherever I was wrong, forgive me. Wherever I was wronged, help me release what I am holding that only hurts me. Build a new thing on top of this ground. Amen.
