What Does God Say About Cheating?

“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

Exodus 20:14

Four words, no fine print. God placed this beside murder and theft, which tells you what He believes adultery does: it kills something and it steals something. The command is short because the line is clear. Everyone standing at the edge of it knows exactly where it is.

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”

Hebrews 13:4

Marriage is honourable, and the bed undefiled. Scripture defends marital intimacy as something holy and worth guarding. The warning at the end is for anyone who treats another person's covenant as available. God will judge means the accounting is real, even when nobody else finds out.

“But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.”

Proverbs 6:32

Solomon skips the lecture and states a mechanism: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. Affairs advertise escape, excitement, the feeling of being seen again. Solomon says the bill lands closer to home. The thing being spent is your own soul.

“Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.”

Malachi 2:14

The men of Malachi's day wondered why God stopped receiving their worship. Here is the answer. The LORD stood as witness at your wedding, whether or not you noticed Him there, and He watched what you did to the wife of your youth. Cheating always has a witness. Treachery against a spouse registers in heaven as treachery against Him.

“For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.”

Psalm 55:12-14

If you are the one betrayed, David has already written your ache down. An enemy's attack he could have survived. This came from mine equal, my guide, the person he worshipped beside. God included this psalm so that betrayed people would have words. Use them tonight, out loud if you need to.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Psalm 51:10

David prayed this after his own adultery had been dragged into the light. Notice what he asks for. A clean heart, created, because the old one could not be patched. If you are the one who cheated, this psalm is the path back: no minimizing, no blaming, just full ownership handed to the only One who can make hearts new.

“When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”

John 8:10-11

She was caught in the act, and the law demanded stones. Jesus sent the accusers away first. Then He said both sentences, and both matter: neither do I condemn thee, and go, and sin no more. Mercy that pretends nothing happened is absent from this scene, and so is condemnation. He hands her a future instead.
