What Does God Say About Burnout?

“But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.”

1 Kings 19:4-8

Elijah had just won the biggest public victory of his career, and one chapter later he is under a tree asking to die. That is burnout, not weakness. Watch God's response. No rebuke, no sermon, no new assignment. Food, water, and sleep, twice, before a single word about the future. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is eat something and go to bed.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus addresses the labouring and heavy laden directly, which means He expected them. His offer is rest, and His method is an exchange of yokes. You have been pulling a load He never assigned. His is easy, His burden light, and the proof is His own temperament: meek and lowly, not driving. Come is the only requirement.

“And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”

Mark 6:31

The disciples had just returned from ministry, and the crowds were so thick they could not even eat. Jesus' response was not a strategy meeting. Come apart and rest a while. If the Son of God pulled His team off the field at the height of demand, your unfinished list can wait too.

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.”

Psalm 23:2-3

He maketh me to lie down. The shepherd decides when the sheep rest, because sheep will graze themselves into exhaustion. He restoreth my soul is shepherd language too: to bring back what wandered off. Restoration is His work, done on you. It is not another task on your list.

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”

Psalm 127:2

Solomon, the most productive king Israel ever had, calls the grind vain: rising early, staying late, eating the bread of sorrows. Then the turn. He giveth His beloved sleep. Sleep is not a lapse in productivity here. It is a gift, and receiving it is an act of trust that God runs the world while you are unconscious.

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:29-31

Even the youths shall faint. Isaiah removes the illusion that energy is a matter of age or willpower; everyone runs dry. The renewable ones are those who wait upon the LORD, which is exactly what burnout resents doing. Waiting feels like falling behind. It is actually how strength comes back.
