Save me, O God, by thy name. A short psalm for a moment of real danger.
A short and structurally clean rescue psalm. The Ziphites have betrayed David's location to Saul. He cries for salvation by God's name and strength, names the strangers and oppressors, then pivots before any answer arrives: 'Behold, God is mine helper.' He anticipates the sacrifice of thanksgiving and the sight of his desire upon his enemies. The arc from danger to trust to anticipated praise is compressed into seven verses.
The name of God is both the petition and the answer: to invoke it in danger is already to stand on ground that does not shift.
verse: "Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul." The pivot from plea to declaration happens in a single verse and is not explained by any external change.
Superscription: 'To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?' Neginoth indicates stringed instruments. The Ziphites were from Judah, David's own tribe, making the betrayal particularly sharp. The psalm belongs to Book 2's Davidic fugitive collection.

Psalm 54 is the second psalm with a specific betrayal narrative in its superscription. The Ziphites' report to Saul (1 Sam 23:19, 26:1) appears twice in David's fugitive period. The psalm models the transition from crisis petition to thanksgiving already anticipated, a pattern that runs through many Psalms of David.
For when someone you trusted has exposed you to danger. The psalm does not dwell long on the betrayal; it moves quickly to what does not betray.

3For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.

5He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.
