A storm psalm. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters. The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars. The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire. Seven times 'the voice of the Lord' rolls through the short psalm like thunder across the land.
A thunderstorm theophany. The voice of the LORD sounds seven times over the waters, breaking cedars, making Lebanon skip, splitting fire, shaking the wilderness, making hinds calve. The psalm opens commanding the heavenly beings to ascribe glory; it closes with God enthroned over the flood, giving strength and peace to his people. Pure power from first verse to last.
The God who controls the most terrifying natural forces is the same God who turns that power into peace and strength for his people.
verse: "The LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever." The chaotic waters that threatened creation (Gen 1) are under his throne.
Superscription: 'A Psalm of David.' The geographic sweep from Lebanon and Sirion (Hermon) in the north to Kadesh in the south traces a storm front moving south. The 'sons of God' addressed in v1 are heavenly court members, not humans. Early Christian reading applies the seven-fold voice to the gifts of the Spirit.
The 'mighty' (sons of God, heavenly beings) commanded to worship; God as the one whose voice controls thunder, cedar-breaks, wilderness-shaking, and flooding; the people who receive peace.
Psalm 29 is one of the oldest psalms in the collection, showing strong Canaanite influence in its storm-warrior imagery. Scholars note its parallels with Ugaritic Baal texts, deliberately redirecting that theology to YHWH. The seven-fold 'voice of the LORD' became significant in Jewish and Christian numerology. Recited at Shavuot in Jewish tradition.
For when the natural world is frightening and large and you need to know who is bigger. The psalm is not gentle about the storm; it is specific about who commands it.
