What is Jabesh-gilead?

Jabesh-gilead was an Israelite town east of the Jordan, punished in the days of the judges for sending no one to the assembly at Mizpeh (Judges 21:8) and later besieged by Nahash the Ammonite until Saul rescued it in his first act as king (1 Samuel 11:1). Its men repaid that debt by retrieving the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan and burying them (1 Samuel 31:11), a kindness David blessed (2 Samuel 2:5).
