Baal
BAY-uhl
What is Baal?
Baal was the chief god of the Canaanites, and worship of him was Israel's recurring sin, from the days of the judges (Judges 2:13) to the prophets of Baal whom Elijah confronted on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:21). Jehu later stamped out his cult in the northern kingdom (2 Kings 10:28), and the name also appears for men in the genealogies (1 Chronicles 5:5).
Meaning: lord, master (Hebrew)
