What Does God Say About Success?

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Joshua 1:8

This is the only place the King James Bible uses the phrase good success, and it comes with instructions: keep the book in your mouth, day and night, and do what it says. Joshua was about to lead a nation into war, and God's entire strategy briefing was Scripture on his lips. Success detached from obedience was never the offer. Yours will not be different.

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Psalm 1:1-3

The prosperous man in Psalm 1 is a tree, not a rocket. Planted, rooted, fed by rivers he did not dig. His fruit comes in his season, which means there are seasons with no visible fruit at all. If your life looks like slow growth by water, you are not falling behind. That is the picture.

“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”

Proverbs 16:3

Commit thy works unto the LORD. Not just your prayers, your works. The plans, the drafts, the pitch, the shift you are about to walk into. Hand the doing over, and the verse says your thoughts get established. Settled. The opposite of the 3am replay.

“And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.”

Deuteronomy 8:17-18

Moses names the most dangerous moment in any success story: the day you say, my power got me this. God does not deny that your hand did the work. He reminds you who gave the hand its power. Remembering that is not modesty. It is accuracy.

“And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.”

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

Solomon ran the experiment so you do not have to. He denied himself nothing, finished every project, won at everything. Then he audited the results: vanity, vexation, no profit. The most successful man of his age is telling you the summit is fog. Believe him before the climb, not after.

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Matthew 16:26

Jesus prices the whole world and finds it insufficient. Gain everything, lose your soul, and the trade fails. He asks it as a question because He wants you to run the numbers yourself. Nothing you can win is worth the person you would have to lose to win it.
