What Does God Say About Pride?
Pride is the one sin that hides from the person carrying it. You can feel anger in your chest and name envy when it bites. Pride mostly shows up as symptoms: defensiveness, the need to be right, the quiet ranking of everyone in the room. Scripture talks about pride constantly and almost never gently, because God knows what it costs the people who hold it. But these verses are not out to humiliate you. Humility, when you finally reach it, feels less like losing and more like putting down something heavy. Start walking toward that.

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18
This may be the most quoted proverb in the language, and the mechanism still gets missed. Pride does not cause the fall directly. It goes before it, walking ahead, clearing the road. Pride blinds you to the exact warnings that would have saved you. The fall was survivable; not seeing it coming was not.

Proverbs 11:2
Solomon writes it like a schedule. Pride comes, then shame comes, in that order, every time. But notice where wisdom lives in the second half of the verse. Not with the impressive. With the lowly, because the lowly can still be taught.

Luke 14:11
Jesus said this at a dinner, watching guests maneuver for the best seats. The rule He gives is not etiquette. It is how His kingdom works: every self-promotion ends in a demotion, and every honest lowering ends in a lifting you did not engineer. The only thing you control is the direction you start in.

Resisteth is a military word. It means God sets Himself in battle array against the proud. Let that be as sobering as it sounds: pride puts you on the wrong side of the only opponent who never loses. But the same verse leaves the door open. Grace runs downhill, and the humble are standing where it pools.

Paul never says think less of yourself. He says esteem others, look at their needs, carry their interests alongside your own. Humility in Scripture is attention pointed outward, not self-hatred pointed in. Pride starves quietly when you stop feeding it your gaze.

Micah compresses everything God requires into three movements, and the last one sets the posture for the other two. Walk humbly with thy God. Not toward Him, not for Him, with Him. You cannot walk beside someone you are trying to impress. Humility is what makes the company possible.

I confess the need to be right, the quiet scorekeeping, the credit I keep reaching for. You resist the proud, and I do not want to live resisted by You. Give me the grace You promised the humble, and teach me to walk with You instead of ahead of You. Amen.
