What Does God Say About Setting Boundaries?

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Proverbs 4:23

Keep is a watchman's word. It is what a guard does on a city wall at night. God commands you to post that guard over your own heart, because everything in your life flows out of it. Guarding your heart is not selfishness. It is stewardship of the one thing everything else depends on.

“But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”

Matthew 5:37

Jesus commands plain speech. A clean yes and a clean no. Then He adds something startling: whatever is more than these comes of evil. The hedging, the overexplaining, the promises you inflate to avoid disappointing someone. You do not owe anyone a paragraph. A boundary stated simply is Christlike speech.

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.”

Mark 1:35

The night before this verse, the whole city was gathered at His door. The demand did not shrink. Jesus left anyway, before dawn, to be alone with the Father. When the disciples found Him, they said all men seek for thee, and He still did not go back. If Jesus withdrew from good and urgent work to stay whole, you are not more durable than He was.

“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own burden.”

Galatians 6:2-5

Paul uses two different words. The burden you help carry in verse two is a crushing weight, a boulder no one lifts alone. The burden in verse five is a soldier's pack, the daily load each person is built to carry. Boundaries are how you tell them apart. Shoulder the boulders together. Do not take over another adult's pack. Carrying what God assigned to someone else helps neither of you.

“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”

Proverbs 25:28

In the ancient world, a city without walls was not humble. It was doomed. Walls were survival, with gates that opened to friends and closed to raiders. A person with no rule over their own spirit has no gates. Everything gets in: every demand, every mood, every crisis that belongs to someone else. Boundaries rebuild the wall.

“Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.”

Proverbs 22:24-25

Here is a boundary God draws for you. Limit your closeness to chronically angry people. The reason is contagion: you learn their ways, and your soul gets snared. This is not permission to hate anyone. It is permission to step back from what is pulling you under. Sometimes distance is obedience.
