What Does God Say About Premarital Sex?

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Genesis 2:24

This is the first thing Scripture says about sex. Leave, cleave, one flesh, in that order. The union of bodies comes after the joining of lives, not before it. Sex was designed as the seal on a covenant, not the trial run for one.

“I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.”

Song of Solomon 8:4

The Bible's love poem repeats this warning three times: do not wake love before its time. This is not a prude speaking. It is the most sensual book in Scripture telling you that timing is part of the gift. Desire is not the enemy. Rushing is.

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

People agonize over finding God's will. Here Paul hands you a piece of it in plain words: your sanctification, including what you do with your body. Notice the phrase possess his vessel. Self-control is ownership. The question is whether you run your desire or your desire runs you.

“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”

1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Paul's verb is flee, not manage. Some temptations you outlast; this one you outrun. And his reason is not shame. It is worth. Your body is a temple, bought at a price, and what happens in it matters to the One who paid.

“I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.”

1 Corinthians 7:8-9

Scripture is more honest about desire than most sermons are. Paul does not pretend the burning away. If you cannot contain, marry. God's answer to strong desire is not endless suppression. It is covenant.

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”

Hebrews 13:4

One verse, two truths. The marriage bed is honourable and undefiled, nothing to blush about. And sex outside that bed is something God takes seriously enough to judge. The same God who invented the pleasure guards the boundary. Those are not two different Gods.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Psalm 51:10

David wrote this after adultery, so if sexual sin disqualified people, this psalm would not exist. Create is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 1: something from nothing. That is what God does with a heart that comes back honest. You do not clean yourself up first. You ask.
