What Does God Say About Honoring Your Parents?
Honour thy father and thy mother is the fifth commandment, and the first one with a promise attached. It is also one of the hardest to live. Some people read it with warmth. Others read it with a knot in the stomach, because their parents were difficult, distant, or worse. God knew both kinds of families when He gave the command, and He does not ask you to pretend yours was perfect. He asks you to treat the role of parent with weight, because how you carry it shapes your own life. These verses show what honor actually looks like, at every age.

“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
Exodus 20:12
The first four commandments are about God. The moment the list turns to people, parents come first, before murder, theft, or lying. That placement is deliberate. How a person treats father and mother is the hinge between loving God and loving neighbor. And God attaches a promise: honor is not a tax on your life, it lengthens it.

Paul separates two words that often get blurred. Obey is addressed to children, and it is a season. Honor has no age limit. You can be fifty, disagreeing with your father about nearly everything, and still honor him: in tone, in patience, in showing up. Obedience ends. Honor is for life.
