What Does God Say About Friendship?
Most people can count their real friends on one hand and have fingers left over. The older you get, the harder they are to make and the more they matter. Scripture takes friendship seriously, more seriously than most sermons do. It shows friends saving each other's lives, sharpening each other, wounding each other honestly, and staying when family walks. Then it goes further than any of that: Jesus uses the word friend for His own people. These verses show what God builds a friendship out of. Read them and think of your own list.
7 Scriptures for Friendship?
βA friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.β
Proverbs 17:17
At all times. Not when it is convenient, not when you are fun, not when your life is going well enough to be around. Love that keeps office hours is not the biblical kind. And the second half tells you when you find out who your brothers are: adversity. Hard seasons do not create real friends. They reveal them.

Proverbs 18:24
Two truths in one line. First, friendship costs initiative: you show yourself friendly, you text first, you make the plans. Waiting to be pursued is how friendships starve. Second, there is a kind of friend who outlasts blood. Some people reading this have one. If you do, guard that.

Proverbs 27:9
Solomon compares a friend's honest counsel to perfume. It changes the air in the room. Notice the word hearty: counsel from the heart, not advice from a distance. A friend who will actually tell you what they think, because they know you and want your good, is one of the sweetest things Scripture can name.

Proverbs 27:17
Sharpening requires contact, and contact makes friction. A real friend will push back on you, disagree with you, and occasionally scrape. That is not the friendship failing. That is the friendship working. Two soft things cannot sharpen each other.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
This is arithmetic, not sentiment. Everyone falls. The only question is whether someone is close enough to pick you up. Woe to him that is alone when he falleth is one of the most practical warnings in the Bible. Independence is a fine thing to have and a terrible thing to worship.

1 Samuel 18:1
Knit is the word: two souls woven into one fabric. And here is what makes it remarkable. Jonathan was the crown prince, and David was the man who would take his throne. Jonathan had every reason to see a rival. He chose a friend instead. The deepest friendships in Scripture cost somebody their advantage.
Read the full chapter ββGreater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.β
John 15:13-15
Jesus defines the ceiling of friendship, laying down your life, and then walks out and does it. But do not miss the promotion in the middle: I call you not servants, I have called you friends. His reason is disclosure. A servant is kept in the dark; a friend is told things. God telling you His plans is God treating you as a friend. That is what Scripture is.
Read the full chapter βA Prayer for Friendship?
God, thank You for the friends who have stayed. I do not say that enough, to them or to You. Make me the kind of friend Proverbs describes: one who loves at all times, shows up first, and tells the truth kindly. Where I have let friendships starve through neglect, give me the nerve to reach out this week. And thank You, Jesus, for calling me friend before I earned it. Amen.
