What Does God Say About Betrayal by Friends?

“For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.”

Psalm 55:12-14

David says the unsayable thing: an enemy he could have taken. It was you. My equal, my guide, the one I worshipped next to. Scripture gives you permission to name exactly how it happened, without softening it. God put this psalm in His book because He wanted betrayed people to have the words.

“Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”

Psalm 41:9

Familiar friend. Trusted. Ate my bread. Every phrase is another layer of access, which is what makes the heel hurt. Jesus quoted this exact verse about Judas on the night He was betrayed. Whatever your friend did to you, Christ filed it under His own experience first. You are not explaining this wound to someone who read about it.

“But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?”

Luke 22:48

A kiss was the sign of friendship, and Judas made it the weapon. Jesus names it to his face, calmly, without pretending it is something smaller than it is. Notice what He does not do: He does not deny it, excuse it, or let it stop His purpose. You can call betrayal by its name and still keep walking. He did.

“At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.”

2 Timothy 4:16-17

Paul stood trial for his life and every friend he had stayed home. Two things in his response are worth copying. He asks God not to hold it against them, before the wound has healed. And he reports the fact that carried him: the Lord stood with me. The room emptied, and One stayed. That One does not leave courtrooms.

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”

Genesis 50:20

Joseph says this to the brothers who sold him. Read it carefully: he does not say it was fine, or that they meant well. Ye thought evil against me. He names the evil and God's purpose in the same sentence, because both are true. God does not need your betrayer's repentance to finish His plans for you. He was writing a longer story the whole time.

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Romans 12:19

This verse is not telling you the wrong did not matter. It is telling you the case has been transferred to a higher court. Vengeance is mine means the file is on God's desk, with a Judge who saw everything and cannot be lied to. You put down the gavel not because justice is cancelled, but because it is covered.
