Psalms 125King James Version

A brief trust psalm about the stability of those who trust in the LORD. They shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed and abides forever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people. The rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous. Do good, O LORD, to those who are upright. As for those who turn aside to crooked ways, the LORD will lead them forth with workers of iniquity. Peace upon Israel.

The stability of the mountains surrounding Jerusalem is the image for divine protection: immovable geography as the metaphor for the permanent encirclement of God's people.

verse: "As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever." The geography of Jerusalem makes the theological point visual.

Superscription: 'A Song of degrees.' The physical geography of Jerusalem is genuinely surrounded by hills visible from within the city. The pilgrim ascending to Jerusalem would experience this encirclement. The psalm makes the geographical fact into a theological statement.

Those who trust in the LORD as the immovable Zion people; God as the mountain-like surrounding protector; the wicked whose rod temporarily presses the righteous; the good and upright; Israel as the closing blessing.

Psalm 125 is one of several ascent psalms that use Jerusalem's physical geography as theological metaphor. The encirclement of mountains around Jerusalem was a physical reality that pilgrims ascending the city would observe. The prayer against the righteous putting their hands to iniquity (v3) suggests that prolonged oppression could tempt the faithful to adopt the methods of their oppressors.
