A thanksgiving for deliverance rehearsed as near-miss. 'If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say...' Then the disaster that almost happened: they had swallowed us up, the waters had overwhelmed us, the proud waters had gone over our soul. But: blessed be the LORD who has not given us as prey. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare; the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD.

Gratitude for deliverance requires first imagining what would have happened without it; the psalm forces the imagination through the disaster it was spared in order to make the escape viscerally real.

verse: "Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped." The bird image makes the near-catch sensory and the escape specific.

Superscription: 'A Song of degrees of David.' The communal nature ('may Israel now say') suggests liturgical use at a thanksgiving ceremony following a communal deliverance. The waters imagery (v4-5) may refer to literal warfare, metaphorical chaos, or both. Book 5.

Israel as the collective community that was nearly destroyed; God as the one who was on their side; unnamed enemies who would have swallowed and drowned them; the congregation reciting the thanksgiving.

Psalm 124 establishes the theological principle that Israel's survival through history is not inevitable but contingent on divine protection. The 'if not for the LORD' framing became a formula in Jewish thanksgiving and is echoed in rabbinic literature about every major deliverance in Jewish history. Its brevity and directness make it portable across disasters.

For when you have just escaped something that could have been catastrophic. The psalm says: say it out loud, name what almost happened, and name who prevented it.
