Psalms 100King James Version

Five verses of pure praise, the most compressed joy in the Psalter. Make a joyful noise, all ye lands. Serve with gladness, come before his presence with singing. Know that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; his truth endures to all generations.

The ground of all praise is factual, not emotional: God made us, we belong to him, his goodness and mercy are not occasional but everlasting.

verse: "Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." The 'know' is indicative, not imperative: this is the fact that enables everything else.

Superscription: 'A Psalm of praise.' One of two psalms with minimal superscription (the other is 98). The title 'psalm of praise' (mizmor letodah) may connect it to the todah (thanksgiving) offering at the temple gate. Its entrance-liturgy structure (come, enter, know) suggests processional use. Book 4.

All lands and all flesh addressed as the potential worshippers; God as maker, shepherd, and the good; the congregation entering through gates and courts.

Psalm 100 is possibly the most widely known psalm in Christian worship, having been the basis for the Doxology, the Old Hundredth hymn (dating to 1561), and countless other worship traditions. Its five-verse completeness (call, reason, instruction, reason, reason) makes it a miniature theology of praise. The 'joyful noise' tradition influenced the shape of Christian congregational singing.

For when worship needs a reset, when you need the simplest possible framework. This psalm has no lament, no petition, no enemy, no crisis. Just the five-verse fact of who God is.
