Who was Asaph?

Asaph was a Levite, son of Berachiah, whom David appointed as a chief musician to lead praise before the LORD with cymbals (1 Chronicles 16:5, 1 Chronicles 6:39). His sons formed a temple guild of singers who prophesied with harps and cymbals (1 Chronicles 25:1), and he is named as author over a series of the Psalms (Psalms 50:1, Psalms 73:1).
