Jonah 2King James Version
From the belly of the fish, Jonah prays. I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; the weeds were wrapped about my head. Salvation is of the Lord. The fish vomits him onto dry land.
From inside the fish, Jonah prays. His prayer borrows heavily from the Psalms, recounting his descent into the deep and his cry to God from what he calls 'the belly of hell.' He acknowledges God cast him there, yet confesses that when his soul fainted he remembered the LORD. He vows thanksgiving and declares that salvation belongs to God alone. The fish deposits him on dry land.
The deepest pit is not the end of the story. When every other option is gone, prayer is not a last resort; it is the return.
"Out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice." (2:2) Hell here is Sheol, the place of the dead, making this a resurrection image: God hears even from the floor of existence.
Total darkness. The smell of seawater and stomach acid. Three days and nights with no horizon, no stars, no shore. Jonah has no leverage, no plan, and no one to call. So he prays, and it sounds like a psalm, all ancient rhythms and raw honesty. By the time he finishes, the fish is already moving toward land.
Jonah alone, in absolute darkness and saltwater, addressing God directly for the first time. The great fish, neither villain nor monster, is simply the vehicle God chose for rescue.
Chapter 2 is the only extended prayer in the book and the only moment Jonah speaks to God rather than about him or away from him. It is quoted as a type of Christ's three days in the tomb. Critically, Jonah prays from inside the fish, before he is released, showing faith ahead of deliverance rather than after.
For when you are in a situation you created through your own choices and cannot see the way out. Jonah prays from the lowest possible place. You do not need better circumstances before you can pray. The voice that reaches God from Sheol can reach from wherever you are.
1Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,
2And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
7When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
8They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
10And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
