And when the morning was come, behold, the host of the Chaldeans compassed the city round about.

And the great angel sounded the trumpet, saying: Enter the city, O host of the Chaldeans; for behold, the gate is opened unto you.

Wherefore let the king enter with his multitudes, and let him take all the people captive.

But Jeremiah, taking the keys of the temple, went forth outside the city and cast them away before the sun, saying: I say unto thee, O Sun, take the keys of the temple of God and guard them until the day in which the LORD shall require them of thee.

For we have not been found worthy to keep them, for we have become unfaithful stewards.

And whilst Jeremiah yet wept for the people, they brought him forth with the people and dragged them away into Babylon.

But Baruch put dust upon his head and sat and made this lamentation, saying: Wherefore hath Jerusalem been laid waste? Because of the iniquities of the beloved people, she was delivered into the hands of the enemies; because of our iniquities and those of the people.

But let not the lawless ones boast and say: We were mighty enough to take the city of God by our own strength; nay, but it was delivered unto you because of our iniquities.

And God shall have pity upon us and cause us to return unto our city; but ye shall not endure!

Blessed are our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for they departed from this world and beheld not the destruction of this city.

And when he had spoken thus, Baruch departed from the city, weeping and saying: Grieving because of thee, O Jerusalem, I went forth from thee.

And he abode sitting in a tomb, and the angels came unto him and declared unto him all things which the LORD had revealed unto him through them.

And when he had departed and the sun had appeared at the dawn, behold, the host of the Chaldeans, having come, had compassed the city of Jerusalem round about.

And the great angel sounded the trumpet, saying: Enter the city, ye whole host of the Chaldeans; for behold, the gates are opened unto you.

Then Jeremiah, taking the keys of the temple, went forth outside the city, and casting them away before the sun, said: Take them and guard them until the day in which the LORD shall require them of thee.

For we have not been found worthy to keep them.

And Jeremiah went with the people into captivity in Babylon.

But Baruch departed from the city and abode sitting in a tomb.
