¹But the doctrines of the Samaritans and the Jews—the Sadducees who believe not that the dead shall rise, and the Pharisees—do wholly grieve me and trouble mine understanding. "We shall die on the morrow," the Jews say. "Let us eat and drink, for we shall die on the morrow; there is no peace we shall find in the grave."

²The Samaritans say, "Forasmuch as our flesh shall become dust, it shall not arise."

³Because the soul was unseen as the wind or a distant voice—lo, it is here—and because it was that which they call unseen, they say the soul shall not arise if the flesh be dead. They say, "When the Resurrection is accomplished, then shall we believe our souls are rising."

⁴But forasmuch as beasts and worms shall devour the flesh in the grave, our flesh is seen by all; it shall become dust and ashes.

⁵"Those beasts that devoured the flesh shall become dust, for they have been as grass; they become dust as though they were never created, and their trace shall not be found; therefore our flesh shall not arise."

⁶And the Pharisees say, "We believe the dead shall rise; howbeit, He shall bring and unite souls with another flesh that is in Heaven, not upon Earth. For where shall the destroyed and rotten flesh be found?"

⁷But the Sadducees say, "After our soul hath departed from our flesh, we shall not arise with the dead; flesh and soul have no rising after they die."

⁸Because of this, they are wholly in error, and forasmuch as they speak blasphemies against the Divinity of the LORD, their doctrines grieve me.

⁹Forasmuch as they believed not the LORD who honoureth them, they have no hope of being saved; they have no hope of dying, rising, and being delivered.

¹⁰O thou Jew who art blind in understanding—when thou wast created from nothingness unto life, even when scorned as spittle—wilt thou make the LORD ignorant, He who made thee a man? Shall the LORD who created thee in His Image and Likeness fail to rouse and unite thy flesh and soul?

¹¹Forasmuch as thou shalt not escape the dominion of the LORD, think not such a thing; thou shalt arise whether thou desirest or no. For there is travail thou shalt receive in Sheol where thou art seized when thou diest, and thou shalt be judged whether thou desirest or no.

¹²For the iniquity found in devils, which devils place in thine understanding, is wrought with thee after thou art born from thy mother's womb, and it is wrought abundantly as thou growest.

¹³They place it in thy body when thou diest, and it shall bring travail upon them for having wrought it.

¹⁴Even as there is iniquity in their heart, there are men who work iniquity being seized thereby; their kind shall be delivered unto devils.

¹⁵All the souls of transgressors shall come from the edge of Heaven where they abide, and thine iniquity likewise shall bring thee unto Gehenna, drawing and bringing thy soul from the place where it abideth.

¹⁶After thy flesh hath dwelt apart from thy soul, the dew of charity from the LORD shall rouse thee, being sevenfold as the flesh of our father Adam.

¹⁷Ye who dwell in the grave, ye also err in your error; let it not seem unto you that ye lead astray others alone. Ye say, "The resurrection of the dead is not true," that they might depart from the Commandment of the LORD and go astray.

¹⁸He shall rouse thee that He might give thee thy travail according to the work thou hast wrought. Who shall suffer thee to remain as dust?

¹⁹At that time—whether thy nature be wind in wind, or water in water, or earth in earth, or fire in fire—it shall come.

²⁰And if a soul that dwelt in thee is that which abode in Sheol, she shall come.

²¹And the souls of the righteous that dwell in the Garden in glory shall come.

²²But thou—Jew, Samaritan, Pharisee, Sadducee—shalt abide in Sheol until thou art judged.

²³At that time thou shalt behold that the LORD shall render unto thee travail according to thy transgression because thou hast led the people astray.

²⁴Saying, "The dead shall not arise; forasmuch as we shall die, let us eat and drink"—and because thou didst sit in the seat of Moses and lead others astray by thy words—thou shalt behold that He shall render unto thee thy travail.

²⁵Without knowing the Law, ye taught the words of the books; because of this ye erred. It were better had ye remained unlearned than to lead a man astray.

²⁶It were better hadst thou not known the word of the books, whilst thou leadest the people of the LORD astray with thine evil teaching and worthless words.

²⁷For the LORD doth not regard persons; He shall give the grace and glory He prepared for His beloved—those who teach good works—but ye shall receive your reward according to your work and the things ye spake.

²⁸There is nothing whereby ye shall escape the dominion of the LORD who shall judge you; He will render unto you according to your work, for ye and those ye taught together shall receive a sentence.

²⁹Know that the dead shall arise; and if they be men that kept His Law, they shall arise. Even as the Earth sendeth forth grass when the rain falleth, His Commandment shall send them forth from the grave; it is not possible that it should remain destroyed and rotten.

³⁰As green wood drinketh dew and sendeth forth leaves when He satisfieth the Earth with rain—as wheat beareth fruit and grain putteth forth buds—it is not possible to withhold the fruit if the LORD willeth it—

³¹and as it is not possible for a woman who hath conceived to shut and prevent her womb when travail seizeth her—as she cannot escape without bringing forth—

³²as dew hath descended upon her being commanded by the LORD, she shall bring them all forth at once. After hearing the Word of the LORD, a grave likewise cannot prevent the persons gathered therein from arising.

³³Flesh shall be gathered in the place where the corpses fell; the places where souls abide shall be opened; and souls shall return unto the flesh from which they were aforetime separated.

³⁴When the trumpet is sounded, the dead shall swiftly arise in the twinkling of an eye. Having arisen, they shall stand before the LORD, and He shall give them their reward according to the work of their hands.

³⁵At that time thou shalt behold that thou dost arise with the dead, and thou shalt marvel at all the work thou didst in this world. When thou seest all thy transgressions written before thee, thou shalt feel a vain regret.

³⁶Know that thou shalt arise with the dead and that thou shalt receive thy travail according to the work thou hast wrought.
