What Does God Say About Tithing?

“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.”

Genesis 14:18-20

The first tithe in the Bible predates the Law of Moses by centuries. Abram has just won a battle, and he gives a tenth of everything to Melchizedek, priest of the most high God. Nobody commanded it. Abram heard the blessing, possessor of heaven and earth, and answered it with a tenth, gratitude with a number attached. That is what the tithe was before it was ever a rule.

“And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.”

Genesis 28:20-22

Jacob is alone, running from his brother, sleeping with a stone for a pillow. God meets him anyway, and Jacob answers with a vow: if You keep me, feed me, and bring me home, the tenth is Yours. Notice what the tithe is here. Not a fee for services, but the shape of a relationship. Jacob is marking, in advance, that everything he will ever own will have come from God.

“And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD.”

Leviticus 27:30

Under the Law the tithe stops being voluntary. Seed, fruit, all of it is declared the LORD's, holy before it ever reaches your hands. The logic underneath survives every modern debate about percentages: the first portion belongs to God because the whole harvest came from God. The tithe never made God richer. It kept Israel honest about the source.

“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”

Proverbs 3:9-10

Firstfruits means off the top, not out of the leftovers. Honour the LORD first, and the proverb attaches a promise: barns filled, presses bursting. This is not a slot machine formula. It is a description of how a life tends to order itself when God comes first in the budget. What you put first shapes everything downstream of it.

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Malachi 3:10

This is the only place in Scripture where God says prove me. Israel had been holding back the tithe and calling it prudence; two verses earlier God calls it robbery. Then comes the offer: bring the whole tithe, and watch what I open. He is not after your ten percent. He is after your trust, and He is willing to be tested to win it.

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

Matthew 23:23

Jesus weighs in on tithing once, and this is it. The Pharisees tithed down to their herb gardens and still missed the point. His verdict is precise: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. The tithe stands, and it is the smaller half of obedience. Give the tenth, then give the weightier things, judgment, mercy, and faith.
