What Does God Say About Poverty?
The Bible talks about the poor constantly, hundreds of times across both testaments, and almost never the way the world does. Scripture does not treat poverty as a personal failure or a topic to be managed from a distance. It treats the poor as people God watches closely, defends personally, and identifies with. If money is tight tonight, you may be wondering whether God sees you, and whether He is ashamed of you. He is not ashamed of you. These verses show where He actually stands. Read them slowly.
6 Scriptures for Poverty?
“This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.”
Psalm 34:6
David wrote this while hiding in a cave, pretending to be insane to survive. He calls himself the poor man. No title, no army, nothing left. And the verse hangs on two verbs: cried, heard. Poverty did not disqualify his prayer. It sharpened it.

Deuteronomy 15:11
God is realistic about poverty. It will not vanish from the land, so He writes the response into the law itself. Open thine hand wide. Not a little. Wide. If you are poor, this verse means God legislated on your behalf before you were born.

Proverbs 19:17
Read the accounting carefully. Whoever gives to the poor is lending to the LORD Himself. God takes the debt onto His own books. That is how closely He identifies with the person who has nothing. Whatever your bank balance says tonight, heaven says you are worth backing.

Isaiah 41:17
This is poverty at its rawest: no water, a tongue failing for thirst. God answers in the first person, twice. I the LORD will hear them. I the God of Israel will not forsake them. He does not send help from a distance. He signs His own name to it.

Luke 6:20
Jesus looks straight at His disciples and blesses the poor. Not because poverty is good. Because the kingdom belongs to people with empty hands. The rich have to be talked out of trusting their money. The poor already know it cannot save, and that knowledge is nearer to the kingdom than it feels.

2 Corinthians 8:9
This is the verse that settles the question. Christ was rich and chose poverty, on purpose, for you. He knows what it is to have nowhere to lay His head. Whatever you are carrying tonight, you are not carrying it in front of a God who never felt it.
