What Does God Say About a Difficult Marriage?

A hard marriage is a specific kind of lonely. You live next to someone and feel farther away every week. The Bible does not romanticize marriage; it shows real ones, with deception, favoritism, silence, and grief inside them. And it speaks to the person still standing in the middle, still hoping. God's word for a difficult marriage is not a quick fix. It is a set of instructions for the one heart you can still steer: yours. Start with these.

6 Scriptures for a Difficult Marriage?

β€œCharity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Paul wrote this to a church that was fighting, not to a wedding. Read it as a job description instead of a poem. Suffereth long. Not easily provoked. Thinketh no evil. None of it requires your spouse to change first. This is what love does when love is hard.

β€œLet all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”

Ephesians 4:31-32

Notice the order. Bitterness gets put away before kindness gets put on. Most difficult marriages run on years of stored evidence, and Paul says to carry that whole archive out of the house. The reason he gives is not that your spouse has earned it. It is that God, for Christ's sake, forgave you.

β€œPut on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”

Colossians 3:12-14

Forbearing one another. That word admits something honest: some things in a marriage do not get resolved, they get borne. Paul is not describing a marriage without friction. He is describing what you wear inside one. And over everything, charity, the layer that holds the rest in place.

β€œAnd above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”

1 Peter 4:8

Fervent charity, Peter says, because the sins are real and they are plural. Love does not cover a multitude of sins by pretending they never happened. It covers them the way a roof covers a house: deliberately, daily, so life inside can go on. Some marriages are saved one covered offense at a time.

β€œWherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”

James 1:19-20

Swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. In an argument those three usually run in reverse. James adds the reason: the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Your anger has never once produced the marriage you are hoping for. Listening sometimes has.

β€œThe LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Some nights the marriage does not need advice, and neither do you. You need to know God is close, and this verse says He is, specifically to the brokenhearted. The distance between you and your spouse is not the distance between you and God. And if what you are living with has crossed from difficult into unsafe, getting help is not a failure of faith. God is near the broken, and He works through people too.

A Prayer for a Difficult Marriage?

God, this marriage is harder than I thought it would be, and I am tired. You see what happens in this house, the words said and the words withheld. Guard my mouth. Soften what has gone hard in me, and reach what I cannot reach in them. I put away the bitterness I have been keeping as evidence. Stay close to us, especially on the nights we cannot stay close to each other. Amen.
