What Does God Say About Dating?

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Proverbs 4:23

Keep here means guard, the way a watchman guards a city. Solomon says the heart deserves that level of protection because everything in your life flows out of it. Dating hands your heart to another person for inspection. Do that deliberately, not cheaply. Guarding your heart does not mean hiding it; it means knowing who gets in, and when.

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Read this as a checklist, not as poetry. Suffereth long. Not easily provoked. Seeketh not her own. Paul is describing love you can observe over months, not chemistry you feel in an evening. Chemistry tells you that you are attracted. This list tells you whether you are loved.

“I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.”

Song of Solomon 2:7

This warning appears three times in the Song, which means it matters. Do not wake love before its time. The Bible's most romantic book is also its most patient one. Desire is good and desire is strong, and strong things need timing. Rushing love does not speed it up. It wakes it before it can stand.

“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

2 Timothy 2:22

Notice the structure. Flee, then follow, then the company you do it with. Paul does not tell Timothy to grit his teeth against temptation. He tells him to run toward something better alongside people running the same way. That is a dating filter in one verse. Find the person calling on the Lord out of a pure heart, and run together.

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”

Proverbs 31:30

Charm can be performed and beauty has a shelf life. Solomon is not insulting either one. He is telling you what to weigh when you choose. The fear of the LORD is the one trait that compounds over fifty years instead of fading. Date with the fifty years in view.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Matthew 6:33

Jesus says to seek the kingdom first, and the other things get added. Not earned, added. A relationship makes a poor god and a good gift. When finding someone becomes the first thing, every date carries too much weight and every silence feels like a verdict. Put first things first and let the rest arrive as what it is.

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4

Paul is blunt about the physical side because God is not embarrassed by it. Sanctification and honour. That means your body, and theirs, treated as something holy rather than something to spend. The boundary is not there to shrink your life. It protects something God built to be enjoyed inside a covenant.
