What Does God Say About Cutting Off Family?
This is one of the loneliest questions a believer can type into a search bar. You are weighing distance from your own blood, and everyone around you has an opinion: cut them off, never cut them off, family is everything, protect your peace. Scripture is quieter and more careful than the internet. It never celebrates estrangement, and it never demands unlimited access either. It shows Abram separating from Lot to end a fight, Paul telling Timothy to turn away from certain people, and a father leaving the porch light on for a son who walked out. These verses will not hand you a verdict. They will give you the materials God uses to build one.
6 Scriptures for Cutting Off Family?
βAnd Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.β
Genesis 13:8-9
Abram ends a family conflict by proposing distance. Watch how he does it. No accusation, no final word, no burned bridge, just space, because we be brethren. Sometimes separation is what love looks like when proximity keeps producing strife.

Proverbs 22:24-25
Solomon gives permission most Christians have never heard from a pulpit. Do not bind yourself to a person whose anger will train you. The reason is a snare to thy soul. Staying close to certain people costs you the person you were becoming. God counts that cost.

2 Timothy 3:2-5
Paul lists the traits, then lands on a command: from such turn away. He does not add an exception clause for relatives. Notice the phrase a form of godliness. Some of the hardest people to step back from quote Scripture while they wound you. Paul saw them coming.

But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.β
Matthew 18:15-17
Jesus gives a process with real steps: go alone, bring witnesses, involve the community. If every step fails, He permits distance. But the goal is stated in the first verse, thou hast gained thy brother. Distance in Scripture is a last resort, and it is a real resort. Both halves of that sentence matter.

Romans 12:18
This is the verse to weigh everything against. Two clauses come before the command: if it be possible, and as much as lieth in you. Paul admits that peace with some people is not possible, and that your share of the work has a limit. Do your part fully. You are not responsible for theirs.

Luke 15:20
The prodigal's father did not chase his son down the road or fund the far country. He let him go. But he kept watching, and when the boy turned around, the father ran. If you have to let someone go, this is the posture: released, not erased. Keep a window facing the road.

Father, I never wanted to be someone weighing distance from my own family. You know everything that led here, the conversations I replay and the ones I have stopped having. Give me Abram's calm and Paul's clarity. Guard me from cutting in anger what You wanted pruned in wisdom, and guard me from staying in reach of harm out of guilt. Keep my heart soft enough to run if they ever turn up the road. Amen.
