Psalms 61King James Version
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
A psalm of exile, brief and concentrated. From the ends of the earth David cries to the rock that is higher than he. He has been a stranger; God has been his shelter and tower. He asks for the king's life to be prolonged, for mercy and truth to preserve him. The psalm ends with a vow of daily praise. The distance of 'the end of the earth' is spatial but also spiritual: the place of being at the limit of one's resources.
The prayer from the ends of the earth is not outside God's range; the rock that is higher than the one crying is reachable precisely because it is higher.
verse: "From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I." The geography of extremity is the occasion for the prayer, not the obstacle to it.
Superscription: 'To the chief Musician upon Neginah, A Psalm of David.' Neginah is singular of Neginoth: stringed instruments. The 'ends of the earth' likely reflects the Absalom period when David fled Jerusalem. The prayer for the king's prolonged life (vv6-7) shifts the psalm from personal to royal scope, suggesting liturgical use for temple ceremonies.
David as the one far off and overwhelmed; God as the rock, strong tower, and tabernacle; the king (David himself or a later king) prayed for; no enemies named, though implied.
Psalm 61 is one of the psalms that connects spatial exile with spiritual longing for the sanctuary. The language of God as rock, tower, and tabernacle is drawn together here more densely than in any single psalm before it. Its brevity and concentration made it a model prayer for exilic Judaism.
For when you have run out of resources and you feel far from anything that could help. The distance in the psalm is the condition for the prayer, not a disqualification.
1[To the chief Musician upon Neginah, A Psalm of David.] Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
2From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
4I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
5For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.
6Thou wilt prolong the king's life: and his years as many generations.
7He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.
8So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.
