Psalms 134King James Version

The final ascent psalm: three verses of nighttime blessing. Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, who stand in the house of the LORD by night. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the LORD. The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion. The pilgrimage collection closes with the night-watch priests blessing and being blessed. The collection that began in distress (120) ends in this exchange of blessing.

The Songs of Ascents conclude with the simplest possible liturgical act: the night-watch priests blessing God and receiving blessing from Zion in return.

verse: "The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion." The creator of everything is the source of the blessing that comes from the specific place of covenant.

Superscription: 'A Song of degrees.' The night-watch setting suggests Levitical singers and priests who maintained a continuous presence in the temple. The short psalm functions as a dismissal blessing at the end of an evening service. It closes the entire ascent collection, creating the sense of a pilgrimage completed and a benediction given.

The servants of the LORD who stand night-watch; the congregation addressed for blessing in v3; God as the maker of heaven and earth who blesses from Zion.

Psalm 134 closes the Songs of Ascents (120-134) with a nocturnal benediction. The liturgical structure creates a frame for the whole collection: opening lament (120) and closing blessing (134). The night service context (standing in the house by night) connects to priestly temple duties and the tradition of night prayer that continued in Christian monastic tradition.
