What is Tetrarch?
A tetrarch was a ruler over a quarter or portion of a region, a title used in the Gospels for the petty rulers of the Roman period. Luke 3:1 lists Herod as tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip as tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias as tetrarch of Abilene, and Matthew 14:1 calls Herod 'the tetrarch.'
