What is Shur?
Shur was a wilderness region on the edge of Egypt, along the route between Canaan and Egypt. Hagar was found by the angel of the LORD at a fountain in the way to Shur (Genesis 16:7), and after crossing the Red Sea Israel entered the wilderness of Shur, where they went three days and found no water (Exodus 15:22). Scripture repeatedly locates it before Egypt, as far as Havilah, marking a boundary of the desert country to Egypt's east (Genesis 25:18, 1 Samuel 15:7).
