Who is Alphaeus?

Alphaeus was the father of the apostle James, listed among the twelve as James the son of Alphaeus (Matthew 10:3, Acts 1:13). The name also belongs to the father of Levi the tax collector, who left the receipt of custom to follow Jesus (Mark 2:14).
