The day of the Lord cometh as a thief in the night. Ye are not in darkness. Let us watch and be sober. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks. Quench not the Spirit. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. The very God of peace sanctify you wholly.
Paul closes by addressing the timing of Christ's return, which no one can predict, and calling believers to live as children of light: alert, sober, dressed for the day. He piles up short, sharp commands for community life, warns against quenching the Spirit, and ends with a prayer for total sanctification.
Not knowing when Christ returns is not a reason for anxiety; it is a reason to stay awake, stay warm toward one another, and keep the fire burning.
"Pray without ceasing." (5:17) Three words that have anchored Christian spirituality for two thousand years, not a command to be on your knees all day but to live in unbroken reliance on God.
A letter read aloud in a small gathering in Thessalonica, maybe a house on a side street, lamplight, people who have been through real trouble together. Paul's words hit rapid-fire near the end: rejoice, pray, give thanks, do not quench, do not despise, prove all things, hold fast. A community checklist for people who mean to stay alive until the Lord comes.
Paul, Silas, and Timothy write to a whole community, not just leaders. The instructions in 5:12-22 assume a church doing the work together: warning the unruly, comforting the faint, supporting the weak, none of it delegated to a professional class.
The final benediction in 5:23-24 is one of the most complete prayers in the New Testament, asking for spirit, soul, and body to be preserved whole. It assumes that holiness is God's work to complete, not the believer's achievement. 'Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.'
For when you feel like you are barely holding on and not sure if your faith is enough. Paul ends not with pressure but with a promise: the one who called you will finish the work.
1But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

6Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

11Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
14Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
15See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
16Rejoice evermore.
17Pray without ceasing.
18In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19Quench not the Spirit.
20Despise not prophesyings.
21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22Abstain from all appearance of evil.
