Prayer for When Everything Is Falling Apart
When it's not one thing. It's everything. All at once. When the ground beneath you shifts and you can't find solid footing anywhere. A prayer for the free fall that won't let you catch your breath.
Lord, things are falling apart around me right now. And I don't mean that metaphorically.
The ground underneath me feels unstable. The thing I was counting on isn't there anymore. And I don't know how to stand when what I was standing on is gone.
I've been watching the news. I've been watching people I love suffer. I've been watching systems fail and plans collapse and people I trusted make choices I can't understand. And somewhere in all of that my peace went with it.
So I'm coming to you. Not because I feel strong enough to. Because I don't have anywhere else to go that actually helps. Every other place I've tried to find peace it runs out. You don't run out.
You said you are our refuge and strength. A very present help in trouble. Present. Not distant. Not watching from far away and shaking your head. Present. Right here. Right now. In this. You called yourself a refuge and strength, and I am holding onto that. Psalm 46 says Be still. That's what you said. Be still and know that I am God. Not: figure it out. Not: fix it first, then rest. Be still. While it's still falling. Be still while the ground is still shaking. Know that I am God before you understand what's happening.
I don't understand what's happening. I want to. I want it to make sense. I want a reason and a timeline and a resolution. But what you're offering me right now isn't an explanation. It's your presence. And right now, I'll take it.
The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Our refuge. Not our explanation. Our refuge. The place we run to. I'm running to you right now, Lord. I'm here.
Let the earth be removed. Let the mountains be cast into the sea. I will not fear. Not because it doesn't scare me. But because you are here. And you have never once lost control. Even when everything around me looks like chaos, it's not chaos to you. That's enough.
In the name of Jesus, I pray.
Amen.
